8/26/03 I went to the track a
couple weeks ago, with only a couple changes since last year. A
carb change, 1000cfm custom designed Holley from Pro-Systems, and
a MSD-7AL-2 ignition, along with a MSD distributor. I have not
had time to really tune the car other than just poking around on
the street. I got only 3 runs in at the track and here were the
results.
1.55 - 60ft
7.19 @ 104.3 - 1/8mile
10.67 @ 132.4 1/4mile
1.43
60ft
6.96 @ 105.1
1/8mile
10.49 @ 134.02 - 1/4mile
1.48 60ft
7.05 @ 104.81 1/8mile
10.55 @ 133.71 1/4mile
Not bad considering all my changes have not been dialed in. I did not have time to adjust jets, mess with timing, etc. The car runs extremely fat, and it pulls better on the top end, well, better than it used to, but still a little weak before the traps. I still think if I go with a 28 tall tire it will help me tremendously. So if I get this other car finished up within the next 2-3 weeks, I plan on at least getting my car Pro-shifted, seeing I am still NOT able to power-shift this car at all.
I hope between pro-shifting the trans, 28 tall tires, and tuning the car, I should be knocking on the door of single digits!! My goal has always been 9.99, so I think its not too far out of my reach! Not bad for a budget car, huh.
9/15/02 Hey Kevin,
Finally I have something to talk about. After the weather not
being on my side last weekend, I was afraid to say anything about
the track for this weekend. Well sure enough it rained this
morning, so I was watching the weather channel closely, and it
seemed that just north of us it wasn't raining. So I took a
gamble and headed out in the rain. I have NEVER driven my car in
the rain, just to let you know. It is so freakin messy and dirty
now, is unbelievable, but oh well. On my journey to the track I
was getting a little nervous cause I was 3/4 the way there and it
was still raining. Well about 10 miles from the track it stopped
like a line was drawn on the ground. COOL, if it would hold off I
may get a few passes in.
Right off the road, & unload a few minor things, and on the
track I went . The car is running pretty good, just some minor
tuning needed to be done. I currently am running MT ET
streets 26 x 11.5, 10lbs & 12lbs of pressure, and
the suspension setting as I last sent you. I make a pass, and
something malfunctioned with the track clocks, so I only got a
1/8 mile time, here is the numbers:
1.62 - 60ft
7.45 @ 101 mph - 1/8 mi
That pissed me off so I went right back for another pass
1.51 - 60ft
7.21 @ 102.02 mph 1/8 mi
11.05 @ 128.74 mph
The car seemed to lay down at about mid to end of 4th gear, so I did a plug check and, the plugs were white. I upped the jets 3 sizes front and back and went back out. My shifter tee handle popped loose in 4th so I pedaled it thinking I missed the shift, but it was in gear, so I'm sure I lost a couple tenths with this run.
1.519 60ft
7.239 @ 99.43 mph 1/8 mi
11.12 @ 126.43 mph
Plug check again and see now the plugs are just a bit black and brown, so I went down 1 size jet, front & back. This run was going ok until I tried to power shift and missed 2nd gear all together.
1.56 60ft
7.725 @ 100.36 mph 1/8 mi
11.587 @ 128.6 mph
Final plug check and they look perfect, nice and tan! and the car seemed to pull through ok, but still out of steam by top of 4 th. So I decided stay with these jets and just mess with driving. Next run was a clean pass, but still granny shifting cause the trans will not power shift over 6000 rpm. I have decided that I will eventually get my trans pro-shifted, cause this is for the birds.
1.49 60ft
7.13 @ 103.18 mph - 1/8 mi
10.93 @ 130.02 mph
Now its getting late, so I figured I would get one more final pass in to call it a day. I wanted to try a higher launch rpm, to see what happened, & it turned out to be a clean pass, but spun out of the hole hard.
1.547 60ft
7.20 @ 103.21 mph 1/8 mi
10.99 @ 130.42 mph
All in all a good day, with the car leveling off and the end of the track, and running out of gear, I think I need 28" tall tires for sure. The combo has lots of torque to handle the taller tire, and I think it will get me through the traps better.
Kevin, I must congratulate you! You are the first guy to get my torque monster car to hook! My car being a stick, and being on 26" street tires, with this much torque, I am shocked that I got a 1.49 60ft time & consistent 1.51's. The car lifted the drivers tire on the 2nd gear shift! I have never done better than a 1.7 before, even on a drag slick. It's not like I didn't have (so called) good suspension before either, I had SSM bars & Bennet adjustable uppers before, and it just wouldn't hook. The car drives so straight, & does not seem to torque the body too hard either. These little tires would spin, but would stay planted enough to where they didn't brake loose after the initial hit. Nice suspension for sure! I will be extremely happy to help promote it for you! If you ever have anyone who doubts it, send them my way and I'll tell them first hand. I can't wait to see what would happen if I had a 28" x 10.5w ET Drag on there. I will see if I can find some to borrow before the end of the season and make it back one more time. Thanks again for all your help and especially your patience with me getting to the track. I promise you that these times will only get better! Remember the car is a 1/2" lower than what you would prefer. Not a bad day for some initial testing! I am extremely happy, and hope you feel the same.
Note: The launches were around 4000 rpm for the 1.49-1.51, and approx 3000-3500 for the first run.
